Mysuru: account of International Museum Day celebrations, the Department of Archaeology, Heritage and Museums had organised a special event ‘Museum on Wheels’ where participants visited various museums across Mysuru city on Sunday (May 18).
The event, under the theme ‘The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities,’ was inaugurated by Department Commissioner A. Devaraju at Wellington Government Museum and Art Gallery on Irwin Road.
Speaking on the occasion, Devaraju deliberated about the history and importance of museums. About 150 participants including children, general public, senior citizens, school and college students from Mysuru, Mandya and Hassan districts, were taken around Wellington Museum where they were shown various artefacts, Mysore style paintings, Tanjore style paintings, Indian contemporary paintings, Mysore Royal Family and Palace artistes’ paintings.
The participants were also introduced to various tribal cultures and customs.
Later, they visited Payana (car museum near Srirangapatna), Regional Museum of Natural History in Siddarthanagar and Railway Museum on KRS Road.
In-charge Deputy Director of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage Department Dr. C.N. Manjula, Heritage Conservation Engineer T. Tharakesh, in-charge Assistant Director Sunil Kumar and in-charge State Gazetted Assistant D. Manjunath were present.

EkDeshEkDhadkan at Anthropological Museum
Under the Ministry of Culture’s unifying initiative, EkDeshEkDhadkan (One Nation, One Heartbeat), the Zonal Anthropological Museum, Southern Regional Centre, Mysuru, in collaboration with the Karnataka State Tribal Research Institute, KSTRI, Mysuru, had organised a vibrant storytelling session to commemorate International Museum Day on May 18.
The event brought together ex-servicemen and tribal community leaders from Karnataka, who shared challenging stories from their personal and community experiences. These narratives showcased the resilience and cultural richness of diverse communities in the State.
To honour their contributions, the Anthropological Survey of India felicitated the participants with mementos, recognising their courage and heritage.
The event was inaugurated with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by tribal leaders, Dr. Harasawardhana (Deputy Director) and Dr. Krishnamurthy (Research Officer, KSTRI).
The programme concluded with a captivating Marikunitha dance performance by the Soliga tribal group, highlighting Karnataka’s vibrant tribal traditions.
