Was rejected 20 times before success, recalls Amish Tripathi

July 5, 2026

Mysuru: Former diplomat and bestselling author Amish Tripathi has asserted that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a useful research tool but cannot create or meaningfully modify literary works and that it should be used as a tool not a crutch.

He was speaking on the topic ‘Pouranic Fantasies and Divine Superheroes’ during a panel discussion on the second and concluding day of the 10th edition of the Mysuru Literature Festival (MLF)-2026. The session was moderated by author and entrepreneur Aroon Raman.

“AI is not capable of modifying literature. I test it frequently, but it is a very useful research tool while writing a book,” he said, while also speaking about the new technology.

Tripathi said several established writers may continue using AI as a support tool. However, he cautioned that youngsters should use AI only as a launch pad, as overdependence on it weakens creativity. He observed that many young people are now seeking AI’s opinions even to maintain personal relationships, calling it an unwise practice.

“It can only provide answers that satisfy your ego. AI is a people pleaser and should be used only as an assistant and not as something to be completely dependent on,” he opined.

Motivated to write

“I study nearly 100 books before writing even a single page. The moment I open my laptop, a new world emerges before me, which I consider a divine blessing. That is what motivates me to keep writing. Likewise, achievements in music, innovation and many other fields are also the result of divine blessings,” said Tripathi.

Recalling his early days as an author, Tripathi said, “In 2008, I wrote my first book, but it was rejected by over 20 publishers, each giving different reasons. One publisher even suggested that I write a campus love story. Eventually, I published the book myself, and it received an overwhelming response. I advise aspiring writers never to give up, but to be cautious about the business aspects while signing agreements with publishers.”
