Water leaks from Lingambudhi Lake; residents fear flooding

October 15, 2017

Mysuru: While heavy rain has resulted in flooding in many parts of the city, it has filled up lakes, bringing cheer as they have filled up after many years. The downside of this, however, is leakage. Take the iconic Lingambudhi Lake in city for example, where a huge amount of water is being wasted from a sluice gate.

The water leak has terrified the residents around the Lake, who have expressed fear that water might enter into their houses.

Experts say that if water continues to leak from the sluice gate, the Lake that has been filled up after many years will go dry.

Residents said that the lake has remained unfilled since the past 30 years is brimming with water following with widespread rain this post-monsoon. The leak was observed yesterday morning by some residents of Preethi Layout who alerted the Forest Department and the District Administration.

A team of Forest officials visited the Lake and realised that due to pressure, the sluice gates have been broken. Due to water gushing out from the Lake, the adjoining areas such as Preethi Layout, Srirampura Layout, Parasayyanahundi, Rayanakere and Kotehundi are under threat of flooding.

The problem is compounded as most of the Rajakaluves (feeder canals) around the lake have been encroached upon, blocking the natural flow of water.
