We urgently need circular bus routes

June 17, 2019

Sir,

Two years back (23.7.2017) I had written an article in SOM to introduce circular bus routes like it is implemented in Bengaluru. Unfortunately our elected representatives are so busy that they cannot take any initiative.

Mysuru City public transpor-tation is in a pathetic state as the Transport authorities including the KSRTC are not on social media like Twitter and Facebook. Neither do they respond to any emails nor do they read newspapers and respond. It is quite opposite in Bengaluru where the same department is proactive and responds to public queries and demands.

Every day, we are seeing more and more congestion in the Central Business District (CBD) of Mysuru and one of the main reasons is our city bus routing via the City Bus Stand (CBS). All the buses in Mysuru touch CBS except Route 10. If people get direct connectivity between localities through public transport with frequent buses, why would anyone take private vehicles?

People talk about Metro for Mysuru when we do not have proper buses – a basic requirement of every city. Per kilometre of elevated Metro costs Rs. 200 crore. With Rs. 200 crore at 20 lakh per bus, we can get 1,000 buses or 400 Volvo buses costing at Rs. 50 lakh per bus which are running in Hubballi-Dharwad section.

With the current 500 buses, many buses are infrequent and overcrowded. At least can we get 200 more ordinary buses and directly connect localities, schools, prime hospitals and railway station without going through CBS and getting stuck in traffic?
