World Folk Day observed

September 23, 2018

Mysuru: Marking World Folk Day, the Folk Division of Kuvempu Institute of Kannada Studies (KIKS) had organised a function at its premises in Manasagangotri here yesterday.

A rendition of ‘Balanagamma Kathanakavya’ was presented by folk singers Bhagyamma, Lakshmamma, Devamma and troupe.

The programme was inaugurated by KIKS Guest Professor Dr. P.K. Rajashekar by playing on a ‘Thamboori’ and offering Ragi to the ‘Madilu’ of the singers to symbolise the folk tradition.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rajashekar regretted that urban singers were distorting the original folk music by altering the tunes. He advised folk students to study not for just a degree but to understand the essence of folk art by good field work.

KIKS Director Dr. N.M. Talawar presided. Folk Study Centre Chairman Dr. M. Nanjaiah and others were present.
