World Heart Day: Precision Cardiac Care at Apollo BGS Hospital saves lives

September 29, 2022

By Dr. Arun Srinivas, Chief Interventional Cardiologist and Head of Apollo Heart Institutes,

Apollo BGS Hospitals, MysuruCardiovascular Disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death globally and one of the most severe health problems throughout the world. It is estimated that cardiovascular disease is responsible for about 23 million deaths annually. Hence there is an urgent need for more efforts and the use of newer technology to diagnose and treat heart disease to reduce the global burden of cardiovascular diseases and non-communicable diseases and to reduce the morbidity and  mortality of CVD.

At Apollo BGS Hospitals, we have been practising the following advanced technology procedures to treat cardiovascular diseases among our patients, giving them the advantage of access to the best treatment within the city with faster and safer recovery.

Primary Angioplasty – The Gold  Standard for Heart Attack

Primary angioplasty is defined as an emergency angioplasty and stenting procedure done to treat a heart attack. Heart attacks occur due to a gradual or sudden blockage of narrow blood vessels called coronary arteries that supply blood to nourish the heart’s musculature. Primary angioplasty can save more than 90% of heart attack patients if done rapidly by an experienced Cardiology Team within a few hours of the onset of chest pain. Through this procedure, a wire carrying a tiny balloon is introduced into the blocked heart blood vessels through an artery in the wrist or the groin and the balloon is inflated to open up the blocks. Usually, this is followed by inserting and placing a tiny spring-like device called a stent at the ballooned site to keep it open permanently. It is the one emergency procedure that saves the maximum number of lives worldwide.

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) is a minimally invasive procedure done under local anaesthesia through the leg artery to replace a narrowed, non-functioning aortic valve. Since it does not involve a significant open-heart surgical procedure, it is the preferred therapy for elderly patients above 65 years with a narrowed aortic valve who have symptoms of breathlessness, chest pain, fatigue, dizziness or fainting attacks.

Endovascular Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair

The aorta is the main blood vessel that supplies blood to the abdomen, pelvis and legs. An abdominal aortic aneurysm occurs when an area of the aorta becomes enlarged or balloons out due to weakness in the artery wall and often occurs in males over the age of 60 years. Surgical repair involves major surgery and, therefore, carries greater risk and delays recovery. Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) is a minimally invasive procedure done through the femoral artery (in the upper thigh). A mesh metal tube (Stent Graft) is placed and fastened inside the aneurysm. This strengthens the weakened portion of the aorta and prevents it from further enlargement and rupture.

Advanced Pacemaker Therapy

A Pacemaker is an electronic device implanted in the body to monitor and automatically set the correct heart rate and rhythm if they go wrong. It gives an electrical stimulus to the heart when it does not usually beat and restores its rhythm. It runs on batteries, is implanted just under the skin and has thin wires connecting it to the heart chambers. Pacemaker batteries are very long-lived and need to be replaced only about once in ten years or so.

Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)

Cardiac arrest is a sudden loss of heart-pumping function, breathing and loss of consciousness. Abnormal heart rhythms cause most sudden cardiac deaths. An Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) is a small battery-powered device similar to a pacemaker placed in the chest to detect and treat life-threatening irregular heart rhythms automatically.

At Apollo BGS Hospitals, we have been practising Precision Cardiology with the best available technology to treat heart patients to improve acute results and long-term survival. With newer technology, it is now possible to treat more complex cases, including high-risk ones unsuitable for surgery, with shorter hospital stays, thus enhancing the quality of life and saving lives. So, your best chance to survive a heart attack is at Apollo BGS Hospitals.

These cardiologists qualified in India, but boast about training abroad, give robotic respoponse like this. They themselves suffer from heart ailments like Javeed Nayeem, because of their lack of exercise and bad diet.
The best approach is always used a balanced diet with restricted salt and fat. Which means shunning car culture.
American style gyms and treadmills, will not help, if you do not sacrifice your car.
The acid test about how good these cardiologists are, to find out whether the ministers and rich VIPs consult them. The answer is NO.
Are they half as good as their counterparts in Singapore? The answer is NO.

  2. Magadi Kempegowda says:

Where is Javeed Nayeem, prattling about heart. He surely should know , as he himself underwent angioplasty! Physician, heal thyself!
There must be at least 3 dozen cardiology clinics in Mysore,. The pollution, the bad diet and car culture , means money for these people. Patient dies eventually!
Why in Mysore/India, these doctors have beards or moustaches?
Where is Devegowda’s son-in-law , who is also a cardiologist?
Mysore must have had a large number of heart patients! Years ago hardly a dozen!

  3. Sanjay Kini says:

The Best Cardiologist in mysuru and a great human being. His treatment helped cure my mothers heart from 20% functioning due to other auto immune disease it went upto 55% functioning and she has now lived extra 10 years .God should create more good human beings like him.

  4. Mann Ki Baat! says:

    Hello Sanjay Kini
What you are alluiding to is a straight forward treatment in the West, with better results.
In the West, cardiologists and cardio-thoracic surgeons are audited regularly on their successe s of treatments, so that the patients can decide, who is good or not unlike in Mysore/India, which is often a hearsay evidence.
You have often expressed your enthusiasm about the exapnsion of the Mysuru airport, and the jet passenger aircraft landing and taking off to medium distances.
The Singapore Airlines, are interested in weekly flights to Mysuru-from what I heard during a recent visit, with a stop in between. Similar case with the Emirates Airlines, for a non-stop UAE/Abu Dhabi -Mysuru flight. Narendra Modi, on his UAE stop over from the observer’s position in the G7 Summit in Munich ( Indian media boasted he was a participant-he was not ,as not even China is in the G7 group, the test being per capita income in USDs), assured such flights.
This opens up opportunities for cardiac patients in Mysuru to go to the UAE-it has The branch of the world famous Cleveland Clinic, the best cardiac clinic (https://www.clevelandclinicabudhabi.ae/en/pages/default.aspx) or to Singapore which has the best cardiac care in the EH cardiac clinic:https://www.eheartspecialist.com/
These hospitals have cardiologists who became specialists through merit and hard work-not through what caste they belong to.
So , when you bat for touris coming to Mysuru, you might also like to mention the above,. Mysoreans can get the best medical care , guaranteed proper diagnosis and gtreatment.
That was what happened when Tanveer Sait, MLA, could not be cured in Mysuru, went to UAE and got properly treated.

  5. Gusto says:

The expansion of the Mysore airport opens up opportunities for Mysore patients to go to Abu Dhabi, which has the best collection of British and American hospitals. They need not suffer from both the illness, which hardly get proper diagnosis and treatment in these so called cardiac care hospitals , and expertise, which is hardly of world class. Saves money and agony in the long run.

My parents were both doctors in Lod Angeles USA. My mother is an MD doctor and stood second in her class by 10 marks because in those days there was not much importance in coming first and when she says Dr.Arun is the best it has some value. he is highly educated both in India and abroad. Believe in a Doctor and his experience, not a fancy American branded clinic that is good at marketing, I am just trying to help middle-class Indians whom my mother served all her life in India who can’t afford to go abroad to these fancy clinics . The rich can go abroad to these branded clinics. What is important is how knowledgeable and updated a person is, not where he works, and being head of apollo hospitals heart institute proves that he is the best in mysuru.

  7. Gusto says:

    @Kini
Look at the following 2 sentences of yours:
    1. “My parents were both doctors in Lod Angeles USA. My mother is an MD doctor”
    2. ” I am just trying to help middle-class Indians whom my mother served all her life in India who can’t afford to go abroad to these fancy clinics”
In the first sentence, you have said your mother was a MD in LA! In the second, you have said, she served all her life in India can’t afford to go abroad !
Just what is the truth, @Kini?
Again ,consider this sentence of yours:
“My mother is an MD doctor and stood second in her class by 10 marks because in those days there was not much importance in coming first ”
It is silly that every one aspires to be at the top of the class. MD in India, is a postgraduate specialist research and training involving working closely with a specialist as a mentor. Hence, where was it?
But anyway, was/is your mother in LA or in Mysore? If she was a MD in LA, she is rich and not mere middle-class, as you have mentioned! But then you also say, she was in Mysore!!
Your story has full of contradictions! Post a truthful account for discussion.

  8. Mann Ki Baat! says:

    Hello @sanjay kini
Your narrative, regarding your mother does not add up!
She was in LA as a MD? But you also say she worked all her life in India! If she worked in LA as a MD and then retired to Mysore, she was not middle-class either.
It is a pity, you were not good enough to become a MD, as you have had more knowledge in regards to medical treatments in India.
Just ask Tanveer Sait, MLA, why he had to go to the UAE, having been treated in Mysore.
The Cleveland Clinic mentioned is the very best in the world for heart-related illnesses. Not a fancy brand! But then, you cannot tell your narrative straight.
Coming first in MD -a higher speciality course, always secures a gold medal and an excellent commendation, any where in the world including India!

    Hello Sanjay

Please don’t feed the troll who disguise in many names but same person. He is a maniac.

  10. Gautam says:

    @sanjay kini
I find your posts not honest at best.
For example:”His treatment helped cure my mothers heart from 20% functioning due to other auto immune disease it went upto 55% functioning and she has now lived extra 10 years”
then: “My parents were both doctors in Lod Angeles USA.”
and:”I am just trying to help middle-class Indians whom my mother served all her life in India who can’t afford to go abroad to these fancy clinics”

  11. Mann Ki Baat, Bisi Bele Baat! says:

    @duplicate Gusto
“duplicate” means copy, so you are also a maniac, if you call @Gusto a maniac!
