35 new signals: What is the purpose of a Ring Road?

November 6, 2025

Sir,

It was very disheartening to read the front-page news item titled “Outer Ring Road to get 35 more traffic signals” in SOM dated Nov. 3.

If vehicles are made to stop every kilometre on a Ring Road, what is the very purpose of having a Ring Road?

We already prefer using internal roads because of the 60 kmph speed limit and the long waiting time at existing signals.

Who gives such suggestions to the authorities?

Leave aside the drivers — even the authorities themselves do not follow lane discipline. Barricades have been placed all along the Ring Road, forcing vehicles that need to turn right (and are using the right-turn indicator) to move into the middle or even the left lane before making the turn at intersections.

Perhaps the authorities want to accumulate vehicles and release them in bunches at every signal, just to make Mysuru look busier! The Ring Road, despite having four lanes and service roads, has far too many unnecessary intersections. One hopes that someone will bring some good sense to authorities. Otherwise, Mysuru’s interior roads will become even more congested as motorists start avoiding the Ring Road altogether.
