Mysuru: The 5th Additional District and Sessions Court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife for dowry.
The man, who was sentenced, has been identified as Manjunath alias Manju, son of Javaraiah and a resident of Hullahalli village in Nanjangud taluk.
It is learnt that Manjunath got married to Bhagya, daughter of Chinnaswamy of Haradanahalli on Mar.19, 2014 and was given Rs.45,000 out of Rs.50,000 as dowry at the time of marriage. As Chinnaswamy was poor he was unable to give Rs.5,000 which angered Manjunath.
On Apr.16, 2014, Manjunath allegedly assaulted Bhagya, poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze. Bhagya, who suffered severe burn injuries, was admitted to K.R. Hospital in city, where she breathed her last on Apr.27 after failing to respond to the treatment.
A case was registered at Hullahalli Police Station and the then ASP P. Raja, who conducted investigation, had submitted a charge-sheet against Manjunath to the Court. Judge C.M. Joshi, who heard the arguments from both sides, found Manjunath guilty of the crime and sentenced him to life imprisonment besides imposing a penalty of Rs.33,000 on Manjunath.
Public Prosecutor Nagappa C. Nakaman, argued for the Government.
