Mysuru, Sept.3 (PM&US)- Department of Studies in History, University of Mysore and Tipu Sultan Chair had organised a National Workshop on ‘Revisiting Pre-colonial Karnataka History: Importance of Tipu era’ at the Department premises in Manasagangothri here on Saturday.

About 50 researchers participated in the workshop.

Inaugurating the programme, former Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore and Goa Universities Dr. B. Sheik Ali expressed his displeasure over the present State Government cancelling Tipu Jayanti celebrations.

He pointed out that Tipu was a historical figure of 18th Century and a good administrator.

He asserted that Tipu always fought for social and cultural freedom.

He recalled that the valour of Tipu became evident when he challenged the British, the Army of which ironically had about 80% Indians.

UoM Registrar Dr. Lingaraj Gandhi presided. DoS in History Chairman Dr. Y.H. Nayakwadi welcomed. Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar Chair Visiting Professor Sebastian Joseph delivered the keynote address.
