Mysuru: A bus conductor who married a woman from Paduvarahalli in city committed suicide yesterday morning, just a day after his marriage. While he tied the knot with the woman from Paduvarahalli, he did not tell her that he was supposed to get married to another woman on May 8 at Ranebennur, his native place.

According to the Police and family members, 30-year-old Nadaiah Matapathi, son of Veeranna Matapathi, was a resident of Ranebennur in Haveri District. He was working as a conductor in the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and fell in love with Kavyashree, a resident of Paduvarahalli in Mysuru.

Family members said that Kavyashree had gone to Bengaluru sometime back and took the BMTC bus that was driven by Nadaiah. They had a steady affair for months and used to meet frequently though Kavyashree’s parents opposed their relationship. The duo, however, decided to get married and accordingly, on May 3, Nadaiah came to Mysuru and both secretly tied the knot at a temple in Vontikoppal.

The same day they went to Mysuru South Sub-Registrar’s Office at Ramakrishnanagar and got their marriage registered. Since Kavyashree’s parents opposed the marriage, they went to the house of one Naveen, a friend of Kavyashree, at Navodaya Layout in Vidyaranyapuram and stayed there.

Yesterday morning, Nadaiah hanged himself with his dhoti inside the room they stayed. Seeing her husband’s body hanging from a ceiling fan, Kavyashree screamed for help and by the time Naveen and others rushed to the room, Nadaiah was dead. In her statement, Kavyashree told the Police that Nadaiah took the extreme step when she went to the wash-room in the morning. Later, the body was shifted to MMC&RI mortuary for post-mortem.

Hearing the news of their son’s suicide, Nadaiah’s parents rushed to Mysuru. They told the Police that he was engaged to marry a woman from Ranebennur on May 8, 2017.

They said that invitation cards had already been printed and distributed. Even Nadaiah had taken 200 cards to be distributed among his friends.  The parents were shocked to hear about Nadaiah’s marriage to Kavyashree.

Vidyaranyapuram Inspector R. Raghu has registered a case and is investigating.
