The recent spell of intermittent rains has no doubt increased the water level in Kukkarahalli Lake, but simultaneously contributed to the unbridled growth of common water hyacinth in the lake which has engulfed a large portion of the water surface (see pic). Ironically, this lake used to be a source of water supply to Mysore city, a century ago.

It may be of interest to note that when B.S. Yediyurappa was the CM of Karnataka, in his earlier regime, he had announced a total sum of Rs. 3 crore, in two successive budgets, to enhance the beauty and preserve this lake. Unfortunately, the activities undertaken seem to leave a lot of questions unanswered.

Nearly two decades ago, boating was conducted in the south bank of the lake and this was a part of the itinerary of KSTDC tours. It is no surprise that this was brought to an abrupt stop, and is yet to be resumed by the authorities concerned for reasons best known to them.

The lake used to attract a large number of migratory birds particularly during winter to roost and bird-watching expeditions used to be organised by Mysore Amateur Naturalists (MAN) Association. Unfortunately, due to sheer neglect and encroachments, the number of birds visiting the lake has substantially decreased, disheartening the bird-lovers.

This lake has been attracting people of all ages, including young morning joggers and senior citizens in the evening who come to enjoy the pristine beauty and placid waters of this wonderful lake. It is surprising to note that if Infosys could develop Hebbal Lake, which is very well maintained, wonder why can’t Mysore University take serious steps to ensure that Kukkarahalli Lake does not join the long list of dying lakes, knowing that academicians and stalwarts have visited this lake and made it memorable.

In the interest of Kukkarahalli Lake lovers, I implore the authorities concerned to take necessary steps for beautification and preserving of the lake for future generations
