Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy deserves Padma Award: Senior musician

May 13, 2025

Mysuru: Senior musician Vidwan Dr. R.S. Nandakumar has demanded that the Government of India must consider the name of Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy, the internationally acclaimed Bharatanatyam exponent who has contributed immensely to the growth of Indian culture by offering her expertise in classical dance to lakhs of students over the years, for ‘Padma’ award.

Dr. Nandakumar was speaking at an event titled ‘Kalankura’ organised by Jois Kala Prathishtana Cultural Trust at Ganabharathi’s Ramagovinda Kalavedike in Kuvempunagar recently.

Observing that Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy is successfully spreading the fragrance of Indian culture across the globe, the senior musician said that the Government must recognise her contributions to our culture and honour her for achievements.

Conferring of ‘Padma’ to such deserving persons will enhance the value of such awards and also inspire others to reach similar heights, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy lamented that the present children are learning dance and music for reality shows and to become popular.

“The children who become popular through reality shows will be under pressure to retain that popularity which could prove dangerous. Continuous learning is very essential to master any art. Teachers must also practice regularly along with students. Then only students show interest in learning. Teachers should also organise functions to provide an opportunity for students to showcase their talent,” added Dr. Vasundhara, who hailed Jois Kala Prathishtana artistes for working in this direction.

Prathishtana students H.V. Nayana, R. Anusha, P.G. Sanvy. D. Medini, Prajna, S. Divya, R. Rishitha and others performed Bharatanatyam, accompanied by Vidu. Namratha Jois on nattuvanga, Vid. M.R. Rajesh on flute and Vid. G.T. Swamy on mridanga. Renowned singer Vidwan M.S. Kausthub presented a classical music programme.
