Bharath Cancer Hospital launches ‘Two Minute Action for Oral Cancer Protection’ campaign

May 31, 2025

Mysuru: As part of World No Tobacco Day, Bharath Hospital and Institute of Oncology (BHIO), in association with Merck Specialities Pvt. Ltd., recently launched ‘Two-Minute Action for Oral Cancer Protection’ campaign with the hashtag #ActAgainstOralCancer.

This nationwide campaign encourages individuals to perform a quick self-check using a mirror. People are urged to look out for warning signs such as white or red patches, non-healing ulcers, persistent swelling, voice changes or unexplained bleeding. Just two minutes in front of a mirror can be life-saving. Strategic placement of mirrors in Hospital waiting areas will further encourage awareness and self-checks among patients.

“We are seeing a surge in cancer cases, especially oral cancer, due to late detection and poor lifestyle habits like tobacco and alcohol use. A simple, regular self-check can help in catching symptoms early and improve outcomes,” said Dr. Y.S. Madhavi, Consultant Radiation Oncologist and Medical Superintendent, BHIO.

“Head and neck cancers account for a significant share of cancers in India. Sadly, most patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Awareness and early detection are our strongest tools,” added Dr. M. Vijay Kumar, Senior Surgical Oncologist and Robotic Surgeon.

“Oral cancer is one of the most common cancers among Indians. People often ignore early signs like non-healing mouth sores or voice changes. This initiative reminds everyone that early detection through a mirror check is quick and vital,” emphasised Dr. K.G. Srinivas, Senior Consultant Medical Oncologist.

Senior Consultant Radiation Oncologist Dr. Vinay Kumar Muttagi said that radiation therapy is highly effective when cancer is detected early.

Surgical Oncologist and Robotic Surgeon Dr. Raxith Sringeri said that oral cancer often starts with a small, visible signs and the mirror is a powerful ally with just two minutes every month can help identify those signs before it’s too late.

“Through this campaign, BHIO hopes to reduce delays in diagnosis and encourage proactive health practices,” said Gowtham Dhamerla, Chief Operating Officer.

Dr. Y.S. Madhavi, Dr. M. Vijay Kumar, Dr. K.G. Srinivas, Dr. Vinay Kumar Muttagi, Dr. Raxith Sringeri, Dr. G.H. Abhilash, Consultant Medical Oncologist and others were present.
