Drinking water problem dominates MCC Meeting

March 2, 2017

Drinking water crisis in city rocked the MCC general meeting held at the Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar Hall in Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) premises here on Tuesday with the meeting being adjourned, as noisy scenes broke out during the meeting.

Corporator M.V. Ramprasad, who raised the issue of drinking water crisis in city, pointed out that since four months water pumps had stopped working and added that even the alternative pump was under repair.

He was soon joined by other Corporators, who asked the officials to take the issue seriously as summer had already set in. There is a need to assess whether the 60 MLD (Million Litres per Day) of water which is being lifted from Kabini River was being used judiciously and the issues should be discussed to find out solutions if there are lapses. Meanwhile, Corporator Purushotham accused the officials of being non-responsive to his enquiries and direction which was making him difficult to answer the questions put forth by the residents of his Ward.

Almost all Corporators expressed their anger against the officials claiming that the elected representatives were bearing the brunt of the people due to the apathy on the part of the officials.

The Corporators objected to the release of Rs 2 crore for the development of the road from Five Lights Circle to St Philomena’s Church without bringing it to the notice of the Standing Committee on Planning.

Committee president Nadeesh Preetham said, the commissioner has the powers to sanction works up to Rs. 50 lakh. However, the officials have brought the issue to the notice of the Council directly after approving it, bypassing the committee, he pointed out. Most of the Corporators supported him.

MCC Commissioner G. Jagadeesha, who spoke, said that normal water supply would be restored from Wednesday (Mar. 1) and added that a meeting of officials concerned was held recently.
