A  thought-provoking article on honey bees

April 17, 2025

Sir,

I found the article on bees in Star of Mysore dated Apr. 12, fascinating and thought-provoking. It is in our own best interest to protect honey bees, as they are responsible for pollinating more than 30 percent of the food crops we rely on — including fruits, vegetables and nuts.

As Albert Einstein famously remarked, “If the bee disappears from the Earth, man would have no more than four years left to live.”

Honey bees are believed to have originated in Asia around seven million years ago, eventually spreading across Europe and Africa. Remarkably, they can locate their hives from up to three miles away, using a combination of scent, sunlight and landmarks.

However, their survival is under threat. Climate change disrupts the timing of flower blooms, affecting their food supply. Pathogens, pesticides and the widespread practice of monoculture farming further endanger their populations. Isn’t it fascinating that these tiny, diligent creatures can recognise human faces and even distinguish between individuals? Let us live — and let them live.
