Mysore/Mysuru: All India Mahila Samskrutika Sanghatane (AIMSS), Mysuru Unit, celebrated International Women’s Day by exhibiting the works and portraits of women achievers near Dufferin Clock Tower in city on Mar. 8.
The event was inaugurated by AIMSS Mysuru Unit President Nalina by offering floral tributes to the portrait of German women’s activist Clara Zetkin.
Speaking on the occasion, Nalina said there was a need for society to stand up against the atrocities on women and children being reported across the country and to treat them with honour and dignity.
AIMSS Secretary Asiya Begum said the International Women’s Day must not be celebrated as a tradition but instead it should be a day to protest against the male-dominated attitude of the society.
“It should be a day to fight against the discrimination, to create awareness on women’s rights and to instil confidence among women who are suppressed in the society,” she added.
Child marriage, female foeticide
Asiya Begum also mentioned that a total of 1,775 child marriage cases had been registered in the past three years with 700 cases reported last year.
“A total of 900 female foeticide cases have been reported in Mandya, Mysuru and Bengaluru region in the past two years. According to Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) portal, a total of 80,813 teenage pregnancy cases have been reported in India,” she said.
District Committee members Padmashree, Gayathri, Usha and others were present on the occasion.
