Be alert while using social media: Cyber Crime Inspector

February 9, 2018

Mysuru: The reach of social media and the use of internet is increasing and hence one should be very careful and alert in using them, said Mysuru CID Cyber Crime Police Station Inspector Renukaradhaya.

He was speaking at a special lecture titled ‘Cyber Law and Cyber Crime’ organised by Directorate of Collegiate Education, Mysuru Maharani College of Arts, Computer Science and Journalism Departments at Maharani’s College, here yesterday.

It was found that those involved in cyber crime were all who had failed in SSLC, PUC  and Diploma courses. Social media platforms like Facebook and Whatsapp are being used extensively to spread crime and one should not become a prey to such crimes. The college students must be very alert, he cautioned.

People should be very careful all the time and when fake calls come asking for ATM card details, it should not be divulged at any cost. While using credit and debit cards at petrol bunks, never reveal the pin numbers, he advised the students.

Mahajana First Grade College Criminology and Forensic Science Department Head Dr.J.B. Arvind spoke on cyber laws. Maharani’s College Principal Dr. M. Channabasavegowda presided. Journalism Department Head Dr. S. G. Raghavendra, Computer Science Department Head Prof. H.S. Nagalakshmi and others were present.

There are many instances of people misusing the photographs that we post in social media. There are many links in the social media and emails that are unsafe and hence one should be wary of them. Many have been cheated by unscrupulous elements posing as close friends and well-wishers. One should be very particular while using mobile phones with internet connections. The information stored in the phones could be stolen to draw money from the banks.
