Mysuru: Marking Nijasharana Sri Ambigara Chowdaiah Jayanti, the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat and Department of Kannada and Culture had organised a function at Kalamandira yesterday.
Presiding over the programme, MLA L. Nagendra opined that after Basavanna, Vachanas of Ambigara Chowdaiah were meaningful for society. He sought more programmes on Chowdaiah to popularise 335 Vachanas of the great Social Reformer. He released a calendar in memory of Chowdaiah.
Speaking on the occasion, Maharaja’s Degree College Kannada Professor Dr. K. Thimmaiah recalled that Chowdaiah strongly felt that the body was a temple and work was worship. He said that Chowdaiah in 12th century had fought against the evils plaguing the society through Vachanas with punching messages.
He pointed out that Chowdaiah had fought against harassment of women and superstitions in society. He suggested the Department of Kannada and Culture to organise more programmes on Chowdaiah.
Earlier, folk troupes took out a procession on the main thoroughfares of city. ZP In-charge President S.R. Nandish, CEO K. Jyoti, Additional DC Poornima, Additional SP Sneha, Kannada and Culture Assistant Director H.Chennappa, Akhila Karnataka Gangamatha Samaja Hon. President H.M. Vasanthamma and others were present.
