‘Central Public Works Department should set up Engineering Academy’

August 19, 2019

Mysuru: “CPWD (Central Public Works Department), being the premier construction agency of Government of India, needs to extend and diversify its outstanding services and expertise to the field of Academics as well by initiating its own Engineering Academy similar to the Medical Colleges and Hospitals, and especially ESIC (Employees State Insurance Corporation) organisation,” said CIIL (Central Institute of Indian Languages) Director Dr. D.G. Rao.

He was speaking at the 165th CPWD Day celebrations, organised at the CPWD Complex premises, Nirman Bhavan, in Siddarthanagar recently and said ESIC utilises their existing ESI Hospitals for the purpose of internship as House Surgeons after the final year.
CPWD, being the authority with extremely experienced engineers, should have own  Engineering Colleges all over India and utilise their outstanding experiences and expertise  in the construction field by introducing one year course of practical supervision of construction of buildings to fresh Engineering Graduates soon after the completion of Engineering course.

Government of India should also moot this proposal of availing enormous engineering skills of engineers of CPWD to produce more competitive engineers and to avoid ‘Brain Drain’ from our country, he added.

He said that this approach was very important in view of fresh Engineering graduates hardly possessing skill sets and most of them being not employable in the industry.

As such, Engineering graduates are joining in jobs other than their disciplines as clerks and MTS (Multi Tasking Staff) in Government and Banking sectors, making the engineering study a futile exercise, he pointed out.

Earlier, a voluntary blood donation camp was organsied at the campus. More than 100 people from all Central Government and other Govt. Departments, Banks and general public responded to the initiative and donated blood.

The camp was led by  Dr. Manjunath of K.R. Hospital. Dr. K.B. Gurumurthy, Chairman-cum-Retired Head of the Department of Mysore Medical College and Research Institute and Prof. M. Mahadevappa, Secretary of Indian Red Cross Society, were present. CPWD Superintending Engineer D.S. Nayak presided.

In the evening session, Karnataka Police Academy (KPA) Director Vipul Kumar inaugurated the cultural programme in the campus and while appreciating the role of CPWD Engineers, emphasised the importance of professional satisfaction of engineers on completion of projects on ground realising their concepts on paper and wished CPWD to reach further heights in future.

Kodagu Sainik School Principal Captain R.R. Lal lauded the competency and diversity of the projects handled by the CPWD.

Principal Commissioner of Income  Tax (Retd.) E. Sankaran recollected and appreciated the structural stability of CPWD structures during the Earthquake in Bhuj in 2002.

A documentary on CPWD and its functioning all over the country was screened. As part of cultural programme, a Classical Indian dance was performed by the students of KSGH Music and Performing Arts University, Mysuru.

CPWD Executive Engineer Vijaykumar Swarnkar proposed a vote of thanks.
