Mysore/Mysuru: With the city witnessing increase in population and a spurt in vehicular movement, the city Police have planned to install 350 additional CCTV cameras at strategic and vantage points across the city as part of heightened surveillance and road safety.

According to City Police Commissioner B. Ramesh, at present,  52 automatic cameras  which  capture images of number plates of vehicles that violate traffic rules and regulations, have been installed at spots such as K.R. Circle, areas around Mysore Palace, Raja Marga, Bannimantap Torchlight Parade Grounds, Hunsur Road, Ring Road etc. This apart, 82 ordinary cameras installed at different places have been functioning, he said.

Continuing, Ramesh said that the Government has completed the tender process for supply and installation of 350 additional cameras for the city. Pointing out that identification of spots for the camera installation has been completed, he said that the Police officials have been instructed to install 6 CCTV cameras each at Kalastawadi on Mysuru-Bengaluru Highway and at Manipal Hospital  junction and 100 cameras along Mysuru-Bengaluru Expressway and Ring Road.

Stating that these cameras will be installed at a cost of Rs. 45 crore, the Police Commissioner said with the addition of 350 new CCTV cameras, the total number of cameras in city will be 484. Underlining the importance of installing CCTV cameras at key public joints, junctions, circles and other spaces, he said that this will help in monitoring any suspicious movements, unlawful activities, subversive  acts, fomenting trouble etc. He also underscored that installation of CCTV Cameras will largely help in curbing crimes especially on Ring Road and other poorly lit areas.
