Commonwealth Games – Day 7: Sudhir wins gold in Para Powerlifting

Murali Sreeshankar wins Silver in Long Jump

Sudhir bagged a gold in the men’s heavyweight final of Para Powerlifting to end Day 7 on a high for India yesterday.

Before him, Murali Sreeshankar clinched a historic Silver for India with a best jump of 8.08m in the men’s long jump. Notably, the achievement of Sreeshankar came as the first long jump silver won by an Indian male player in the history of Commonwealth Games.

Meanwhile, boxer Rohit Tokas entered the semi-finals of men’s welterweight category. Defending champion Manika Batra has entered the women’s singles round of 16 with a dominating 4-0 win.

Meanwhile, paddlers Sreeja Akula and Reeth Tennison also entered the women’s singles round of 16 with wins in their respective matches. In badminton, Aakarshi Kashyap progressed to the women’s singles round of 16. The Indian men’s hockey team also had a good outing, with Harmanpreet Singh’s hat-trick helping them register a 4-1 win over Wales in the Pool B match. The win saw them seal a spot in the semi-finals.

Earlier, boxers Amit Panghal, Jaismine Lamboriya and Sagar Ahlawat assured India at least three bronze medals with wins in men’s flyweight, women’s lightweight and men’s super heavyweight quarter-finals.

In athletics, Hima Das entered the semi-finals of women’s 200m while Manju Bala entered the final of the women’s hammer throw event. Shuttlers P.V. Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth won their respective badminton singles Round of 32 matches.
