Curb rampant mobile usage while at the wheels

July 11, 2021

Sir,

With the Traffic Police personnel busy on COVID duty now, the habitual traffic rules violators are having a hey-day, causing immense inconvenience to the fellow motorists.

Usage of mobile phones while driving has become very rampant now. When a four-wheel driver in front of us is on mobile, it can be very irritating. They will be driving slowly while talking on the mobile, blocking free movement of the vehicles.

Since their hands are not free, they cannot use the side indicators causing confusion to the motorists behind them and for the motorists coming from the opposite side.

As the high mast traffic cameras cannot capture the drivers using mobile phones inside their vehicles, they go scot-free while using the mobile phones while driving.

A couple of years back, the then City Police Commissioner commissioned a mobile squad of two-wheelers by name “CHEETHA” and they were doing good patrolling. I presume that then another Commissioner of Police de-commissioned this squad. I think it is high time now to re-introduce this mobile squad of two-wheelers and the pillion rider can shoot pictures of all sorts of traffic rules violations, including the photos of four- wheeler drivers using the mobile inside the vehicle. This will not only help in curbing traffic rules violations to a great extent, but will also generate additional income for the exchequer.
