Darkness on Bannur Road:  A growing threat to safety

June 16, 2025

Sir,

State Highway 33, popularly known as Bannur Road (Vidya Vikas College of Engineering Road), particularly near the Nadanahalli Junction, has  become a cause for serious concern among residents and commuters.

Despite the road being recently developed and widened for better connectivity, it remains concealed in darkness due to the complete absence of  street lighting for most of its stretch.

This lack of illumination has made night travel not only difficult but dangerous. Motorists, especially two-wheeler riders, are forced to navigate with extreme caution due to poor visibility. The situation becomes more risky during the early hours and late nights, where any obstacle or mishap could go unnoticed until it’s too late.

The recent discovery of a woman’s dead body in a deserted stretch near Nadanahalli Junction has only increased public anxiety. This incident has cast a spotlight on how the absence of basic infra-structure, such as street lighting, can contribute to both traffic hazards and law-and-order issues.

Despite the growing number of residential layouts along this route and the daily movement of hundreds of vehicles, there seems to be a complete lack of response from the authorities concerned. Safety should never be an afterthought.

As Mysuru grows and expands, infrastructure must evolve to meet the needs of its citizens, not just in terms of roads and buildings, but also public safety.

It is high time that the authorities take immediate action to install proper street lighting on this crucial stretch and ensure the safety and security of all those who use it.
