Mysuru: As part of the monthly ‘Health Talk’ series organised by Elder Citizens Council at its premises in Jayalakshmipuram, Dr. K. Kumar of CSI Holdsworth Memorial Hospital (Mission Hospital), Mysuru delivered a talk on the topic ‘Infectious diseases – How they develop, how to prevent their spreading into humans and to improve the health care, particularly for senior citizens.’
Dr. Kumar said, the infection spreads into the body through various means which include respiratory, gastro intestinal, sexual, blood borne (transfusion), skin, transplacental (mother to baby while just born). These infections spread without our own knowledge causing various health problems and sometimes even death.
“Our first step to prevent such spreading of infections is through vaccination, drinking clean water, clean air, wearing masks to prevent spreading to others, etc.,” he said.
Diseases like polio and small pox have been eliminated by such preventive measures. But once it is diagnosed for existence of infection in the body, steps like identifying in the early stages enhances surveillance and detection, isolating such patients from preventing spreading to others, wearing masks, taking care of open drains to prevent epidemic/pandemic cases, administering antibiotics and so on.
Apart from the health coordinators, public should also take care of healthy surroundings of the house to prevent spreading of the infectual diseases.
