Elephant Abhi dies of illness at Mathigodu Elephant Camp

March 11, 2026

Mysore/Mysuru: Abhi (23), the elephant which had killed a mahout at Mysuru Zoo and later shifted to Mathigodu Elephant Camp at Nagarahole Tiger Reserve in 2023, collapsed and died on Sunday evening.

Abhi, who came to be known as ‘Zoo Abhi,’ underwent rehabilitation at the Elephant Camp and was also trained to capture tigers and elephants.

About eight months ago, Abhi had fallen into a pit while grazing inside the forest and had sustained a wound on its leg. Though it was being treated, the wound did not heal and his health began to deteriorate. A few days back his health worsened and breathed his last on Sunday. Veterinarian Dr. Ramesh conducted post-mortem and it was cremated in the presence of senior Forest officials.

Details on the cause of death will be known after post-mortem report is examined.
