Fake accidents and laxity in security

December 13, 2025

Sir,

I refer to the many letters to Star of Mysore highlighting the rise in fake accidents and growing security lapses in the city.

We have a large Police establishment meant to assure the safety and security of citizens in this lovely city.

But it is disturbing to note the spate of fake accident cases and the inadequacy — or complete absence — of Police action to curb this trend of extorting money from senior citizens under the pretext of a fabricated incident or accident.

Why can’t the Police use their patrol vehicles to remain constantly on the move across different localities to instil discipline and provide a sense of security?

During the COVID-19 period, there was active patrolling to enforce curfew. Decades ago, regular patrolling on city streets was common. Even posting a Policeman at key junctions would make a significant difference.

If a fake accident situation is created, the very presence and availability of a Policeman would protect senior citizens. Shouldn’t we be free to run errands, shop, dine at restaurants or visit friends in the evening without fear?

I hope the Police Department will take swift and positive action so that we do not lose faith in the availability and effectiveness of Police protection.
