Sir,
This is about the news report, ‘City roads turn into showrooms!’ published in SOM dated Jan. 11.
Such streetside establishments are an eyesore whether in the city, its extensions or industrial areas. They pose significant safety risks to motorists and pedestrians alike. Ironically, our systems act only after accidents occur, often offering illogical justifications in hindsight.
There is no denying that officials collude with these footpath traders, eateries and similar establishments, allowing them to operate fearlessly, in blatant violation of statutes.
Government agencies such as Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), Municipal Councils and Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) should take decisive action to clear these encroachments en masse and work towards beautifying the city and industrial areas.
Many of these establishments, emboldened by illicit arrangements with local authorities, go as far as laying concrete, and tiles, erecting roofs and platforms, and setting up stools and chairs to conduct regular business — all right under the administration’s nose.
Meanwhile, many motorists, displaying little to no common sense, park their vehicles — from trucks to two-wheelers — insensitively, ignoring safety hazards. They spend leisurely time at these footpath vendors and eateries, further exacerbating the problem.
The grievances of taxpaying businessmen are, therefore, entirely justified. SOM was right to highlight this issue, supported by the Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI).
The message is simple: If citizens collectively recognise the importance of preserving the beauty and serenity of our city, we can all cooperate and work together to recreate its charm.
I urge the authorities to respect and uphold the heritage values of our city. Take immediate action to vacate footpath vendors and restore the city’s beauty.
