Mysore/Mysuru: During her presentation on Food Systems for Equitable and Sustainable Health, former World Health Organisation (WHO) Chief Scientist and Chairperson of M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation Dr. Sowmya Swaminathan underlined the importance of policy, regulations and behaviour change in preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
“One key aspect is the need for nutrition literacy in schools to educate young individuals about healthy eating habits. Another critical focus area is primary healthcare, which involves screening, early detection, and ensuring compliance with treatment, particularly among younger individuals who are increasingly prone to developing NCDs,” she said.
Dr. Sowmya Swaminathan also underscored the significance of community involvement and co-developing solutions to address the rising cases of obesity.
Additionally, she emphasised the importance of making physical activity appealing and practical, considering the prevalence of sedentary lifestyles. By adopting these strategies, it is possible to promote healthier lifestyles and reduce the burden of noncommunicable diseases, she added.
