Public chase, catch and hand over chain snatchers to Police

Mysore/Mysuru: Chain snatchers, who used to target women and senior citizens walking all alone and snatch their gold chains, targeted a Head Constable yesterday and snatched his gold chain. But they ran out of luck as passersby not only chased the miscreants, but also caught them and handed them over to the Police.

Yesterday at about 9.30 pm, Head Constable Eliyas, attached to Vidyaranyapuram Police Station and residing behind St. Philomena’s Church, was standing in front of the Church, when two miscreants on foot, snatched his 32 grams gold chain and fled towards Five Lights Circle.

A motorist, who saw the incident, chased the chain snatchers on his bike but fell down after losing control over the bike when it passed over a road hump. But still, the motorist managed to see the miscreants entering Meelad Park and informed others who were chasing the miscreants.

The miscreants are said to have parked their two-wheeler in front of the park, but could not take it as the public were chasing them and hence they hid inside the park to avoid them.

But a group of youths entered the park and after a thorough search caught them along with the gold chain. It is learnt that one of the miscreants is nicknamed as ‘Don’ and the Police have seized the scooter.

Meanwhile, Eliyas, speaking to SOM said that he was standing in front of the Church and praying, when two miscreants snatched his gold chain and fled towards Five Lights Circle. “I will think and then decide whether to give a complaint,” he said.

Though the public caught the miscreants and handed them over to the Police, Head Constable Eliyas has not lodged a complaint. Jurisdictional Lashkar Police are now trying to contact him.
