Kinnala art comes alive at Dasara Exhibition

Mysuru: Thousands of tourists and local residents have been swarming the Dasara Exhibition every day to visit various clothes and toy stalls, amusement park, food stalls and the stalls of various departments.

While people have been enjoying by tickling their taste buds with variety of delicacies and purchasing toys, clothes among others to their loved ones, they are also seen visiting the stalls of various departments that highlight welfare schemes announced by the State and Central Governments. Among the Department stalls that have been attracting a large number of visitors include the one belonging to Kannada and Culture which is promoting the Kinnala art.

Kinnala art having its roots from Kinnala village in Koppal district is being showcased by the Department of Kannada and Culture.  Kinnala art, which dates back to the rule of Vijayanagar Empire in 15th and 16th centuries, involves painting and sculpting on wooden objects. After the downfall of Vijayanagar Empire, the artistes migrated to Kanakagiri, Ilkal, Gadag, Harappanahalli, Lakshmeeshwara, Haveri, Gokak and other locations. 

The art, which is famous for creating toys, idols, decorative and household items can be seen on display at the exhibition.

The expo also enlightens the visitors about the process involved in creating the art work right from creating an outline to creating an attractive idol using gold and various colours.
