Mysore/Mysuru: City’s Fifth Additional District and Sessions Court has awarded life imprisonment to a man for killing his wife besides imposing a fine of Rs. 10,000 on him.
The convict is Shivanna, a resident of Suttur in Nanjangud taluk, while the deceased (victim) is Devi.
Devi, daughter of Ankanayak of Udbur, was given in marriage to Shivanna four years ago and was given Rs. 50,000 cash as dowry at the time of marriage. Shivanna, who looked after Devi very well for about two years, later began to pester and harass her mentally to bring more dowry from her parents.
The village elders held a meeting and tried to solve the issue many times but in vain. Meanwhile, on Apr. 22, 2016, the body of Devi was found near Biligere Somanahalli village and Devi’s parents, accusing Shivanna of murdering Devi, had lodged a complaint with Badanavalu Police.
The then Nanjangud Sub-Division Dy.SP Divya Sara Thomas, who conducted investigations, had submitted a charge-sheet to the Court.
Fifth Additional District and Sessions Court Judge K. Doddegowda, who took up the hearing, heard the arguments from both sides and found Shivanna guilty of the crime and sentenced him (Shivanna) to life imprisonment besides imposing a fine of Rs. 10,000 under IPC Section 302.
In case the convict fails to pay the penalty, he has to undergo an additional five months simple imprisonment and another two months simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 4,000 under IPC Section 498 (A). Again, if the convict fails to pay the penalty, he has to again undergo three years simple imprisonment and has to pay Rs. 4,000 penalty again under IPC Section 201, failing which the convict has to again undergo four years simple imprisonment.
The Judge has ordered the Rs. 10,000 from the penalty amount be given to Devi’s parents besides instructing the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to provide adequate compensation to the victim’s parents.
Public Prosecutor Nagappa C. Nakman argued on behalf of the Government.
