MCC Engineer spreads ‘Green Wedding’ message through son’s marriage

April 29, 2019

Mysuru: The Mysuru City Corporation in a bid to stop plastic waste generation at weddings in Kalyan Mantaps mooted ‘Green Wedding’ concept.

As a first step and to set an example, MCC Executive Engineer Mahesh has become the role model when he celebrated the ‘Green Wedding’ of his son Nischal with Pooja B. Seshadri at a Kalyana Mantap on Apr. 24. Thousands of guests who attended the wedding were given saplings.  Besides, all guests were served lunch and dinner in steel plates and tumblers thus eschewing the use of any plastic material.

This step resulted in the generation of just about 50 kg of waste that was sent to the compost unit in Vidyaranyapuram. The surplus food was distributed to food collection centres to fill the belly of the hungry people.

A team of officials including Deputy Commissioner Abhiram G. Sankar, MCC Commissioner Shilpa Nag and Health Officer Dr. D.G. Nagaraju who attended the wedding also administered the oath and issued Green Wedding Certificate (Hasiru Vivaha Pramana Patra) to the couple Nischal and Pooja and blessed them.

In the cultural city of Mysuru where there are nearly 182 Kalyana Mantaps and Samudaya Bhavans, nearly 250 tonnes of waste is generated. Hence, it is very difficult to dispose this huge quantity of waste. As a result the waste that is not biodegradable will cause huge environmental problems.

Realising this, the MCC and District Administration introduced the concept of ‘Green Wedding.’ Apart from reducing the use of plastic materials and staggering amount of garbage, the waste that is generated will be sent to the compost unit and the surplus food will be distributed in orphanages and old age homes were the highlights of ‘Green Wedding.’

There must also be a total ban on using plastic covers on the tables, plastic glasses and water bottles, ice cream cups and thamboola in plastic covers. Even the wedding invitation must be sent in digital format and the use of paper plates and cups must be encouraged. If such steps are taken, then the generation of waste will be reduced and help in preserving the environment, said Corporation Commissioner Shilpa Nag.
