Media should be the voice for women: Writer

Workshop on ‘Need for imposing ban on inappropriate portrayal of women in the Media’ held at ATI

Mysore/Mysuru: Regretting that women are being portrayed merely as show-pieces in the media, writer Banu Mushtaq bemoaned male dominance in all forms of media and advertising.

She was speaking after inaugurating a workshop on the topic ‘Need for imposing ban on inappropriate portrayal of women in the Media’ organised  at the Administrative Training Institute (ATI) here recently.

Observing that there is just a thin line between fidelity and obscenity, Banu Mushtaq rued that women are being exploited commercially.

Noting that Media should be the voice for women, she said that though there are laws for preventing commercial exploitation of women, little was being done for protecting the rights and dignity of women.

Urging the officials to use their discretionary powers for implementing laws that protect the interests of women, she  expressed disappointment over women being ignored in the framing of Government policies and plans.

Maintaining that the levels of  morality has dipped in all fields and Journalism was no exception, she argued that the crave for profits in commercial dealings will deeply hurt community and societal interests.

Noting that Journalism, among all others, should treat women with dignity and respect, Banu Mushtaq called upon the Media to impose self-restrictions in the better interests of the society.

ATI Joint Director Bhagyalakshmi, in her address, said that an analysis is being made to measure the quantity of success in the co-ordination between communities and the Government.
