Mysore/Mysuru: Organ donation is a selfless and life-changing act by the family of the deceased. It is a challenging situation when one loses their loved ones but at the same time decides to donate their organs  and pass on the gift of life to another person.

In such a life-changing act, the organs of a 26-year-old youth were donated at Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru.

Details: J. Manoj Shankar, a mechanical engineer and a resident of Hebbal, Mysuru, was brought to Apollo BGS Hospitals on Oct. 17 at 11.40 pm in a critical condition after he met with an RTA (Road Traffic Accident) on Oct. 16 night near JC Nagar in city. Initial CT scan showed brain stem infarct. He was shifted to ICU immediately for life support and intensive care.

Manoj was kept on life support for two days while he was in a very critical state. On the third day (Oct.20) at 6.49 am he was declared brain dead due to brain stem failure as per the hospital protocol stipulated by the Transplant of Human Organs Act 1994 by panelist doctors at Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru.

Manoj was healthy before this accident and further tests confirmed his eligibility for organ donation. His family members were counselled for organ donation as per the defined protocol and the deceased patient’s parents Jayshankar and Jayalakshmi came forward to donate his organs.

As per organ donation protocols, officials from Jeeva Sarthakathe, which was earlier known as Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka (ZCCK), initiated the process by the organ recipients waiting list. On Oct. 21, at around 12.24 am Manoj’s organs (Heart Valves, 1 Kidney, Liver and Corneas) were harvested at Apollo BGS Hospitals.
