This refers to the letter titled “Power billing: Yes, CESC is cheating gullible public” (SOM dated June 1, 2020).

I also felt initially that my bill of Rs.4,267.59 for two months was very high. Last month, an ad-hoc bill for Rs. 1,233 was raised, maybe based on previous average consumption, since meter reading was not possible in April, which I had paid.

The consumption for two months was 561 units, based on present reading minus previous reading for the two months. When I checked the calculations, I found that the software used for billing is correct up to a single day. The calculation of fixed charges was taken into account for 61 days and the energy charges, billed slab-wise, is also taking into account 61 days of usage.

 During both the months, we were all indoors and being summer months, the usage of fans and AC was high. You cannot blame CESC for this. As long as the readings taken are correct, the billing done by the software is correct up-to a rupee. It is unfair to blame CESC, which has no role in calculating the bill.
