Spending lakhs of rupees, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) beautified the Raja Marga and its surroundings near the Mysore Palace by installing elegant stone balustrades. These structures not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the area but also imparted a regal character befitting the heritage precinct.

Unfortunately, many of these balustrades have been deliberately damaged by vandals, spoiling their beauty and diminishing the grandeur of the Raja Marga.

Despite the installation of CCTV cameras, vandalism has continued and the broken stone pieces have become a safety hazard for pedestrians.

Recently, while passing through HSR Layout in Bengaluru, I noticed a similar style of roadside balustrades made from wrought iron, a more durable material. These appear to be virtually unbreakable, require less maintenance and are far more resistant to vandalism than the existing stone structures.

They can also be manufactured in different colours to complement the heritage ambience.

Perhaps the MCC could consider introducing these durable balustrades on a pilot basis in a few selected locations.

If found suitable, they could gradually replace the damaged stone balustrades along the Raja Marga. Such an approach would preserve the city’s aesthetic appeal, reduce recurring maintenance costs and provide a long-lasting solution to a persistent problem.
