Science is taught better in mother tongue: Former ISRO Scientist

August 7, 2023

Mysore/Mysuru: Former ISRO Scientist Prof. V. Jagannath has opined that Governments must make sincere efforts to ensure Science is taught in mother tongue.

Prof, Jagannath was speaking after inaugurating a function organised to mark the release of a Kannada book ‘Vishva Mattu Adarache’ authored by Yamuna Suryanarayana. at BM Sri auditorium, Kuvempu Institute of Kannada Studies (KIKS), University of Mysore, Mansagangothri in the city, yesterday.

“Foreign countries have progressed because of Science and that too because Science was taught in their mother tongue, which enabled to reach their children. Foreigners achieved greater heights in technology by introducing Science in their mother tongue. In our country also, Governments must make sincere efforts to ensure that Science is taught in our respective mother tongue,” adviced the retired Scientist.

Observing that Science is a specific knowledge, Prof. Jaganath said that foreign countries could achieve so much because Scientists of those countries have learnt the subject in their mother tongue.

”We also need to imbibe this trait and end slavery. Just encourage children to explore and they will return you the gift of their achievement.  Increased experience begets scholarly knowledge and we need to increase our skills in this direction and move forward. Formal Education System is only a door to gain entry. We need to move forward and shape our future,” concluded retired ISRO Scientist Prof.V.Jagannath.

Gravity Foundation Founder A.S.Abhishek said that those who communicate Science in their mother tongue are regarded as very intelligent.

“Science is not a hard nut to crack and it should be learnt amidst nature. If you study within four walls you will get knowledge and if you mingle among people it is general knowledge. .Parents should encourage children to read Kannada books. It is enough if parents can inspire confidence in children. Don’t fear failure. Failure is the stepping stone of success,” added A.S.Abhishek.
