Silt-filled Thavarekere Lake rejuvenated

J.K. Tyre removes 16,700 cubic meters of silt and weeds that had accumulated over the years

Mysore:  The silt-and-weed-filled Thavarekere Lake at the foothill of Chamundi has got a new lease of life as it has been rejuvenated by J.K. Tyre and Industries Limited, Mysuru, under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.

The Company launched the works through MYRADA Kaveri Pradeshika Samsthe (MYKAPS) in September last year and completed the tank rejuvenation works in March this year by removing 16,700 cubic meters of silt that was accumulated in the Lake. The Company also strengthened the tank bund and developed its islands.

Announcing the initiative recently at the Lake premises, Vice-President of J.K. Tyre and Industries Limited (Works Division) Eshwara Rao said that the Company had given top priority for watershed development activities and for rejuvenation of Lakes as part of its CSR activities.

Watershed development activities would help improve groundwater table and also ease drinking water crisis to some extent at a time when several cities are facing drinking water crisis. The Company has also concentrated on promotion of educational activities, conservation of water, sanitation, protection of soil and other issues in the last 20 years under CSR activities, he added.

In his speech, Assistant Director of District Industries Centre (DIC) Nazeer Ahamed said that the Department is also cooperating with all industries and firms to take up works under CSR programmes.

Speaking on the occasion, J.K. Tyre and Industries General Manager Vikram Hebbar said that company had adopted 10 villages of Hunsur taluk for watershed development works and implemented the works through National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).

It is also providing grants for installation of tiles for the individual toilets constructed in these adopted villages under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, he added.

J.K. Tyre Chief Manager (CSR) Anupam Bajpai, Rangaswamy, Nagaraj, Lokesh of MYKAPS, H.S. Shankar, Mahadevaiah, Chamundi Hill Panchayat Development Officer Purnima and others were present.
