Skill Development Programme, Webinar, Project Symposium ‘Prashashan’ held

August 10, 2020

Mysore/Mysuru: The Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE), GSSS Institute of Engineering & Technology for Women (GSSSIETW), Mysuru, had organised a three-day online Skill Development Programme (SDP) for 5th semester ECE students on ‘Proteus Design Suite’ from Aug.3 to 5. Dr. M. Shivakumar, Principal, GSSSIETW, Mysuru, inaugurated the SDP and spoke about the scope of proteus software in engineering.

Dr. Rajendra R. Patil, Professor and Head, Department of ECE, GSSSIETW, Mysuru, commenced the session by welcoming the participants. He also briefed the attendees about the Proteus Design Suite. Dr. J. Jayanth, Y. Spoorthi, H.C. Rashmi, R. Aravind, R. Sunitha and K. Krishnaveni, faculties of GSSSIETW, Mysuru, were the resource persons.

During this three-day SDP, various hands-on sessions were conducted by the trainers covering different level of programmes and circuits in proteus. The participants were made to work in proteus, keil and arduino tools on these topics.

In each interactive session, different types of circuits and projects were taught to the students by the resource persons.

The SDP concluded with mini-project simulation and demo. The students were also given assessment to test the skills learnt during the SDP.

Webinar

Department of Physics, GSSSIETW, Mysuru, had recently organised a Webinar on ‘Quantum Computing: Fundamentals and Practical Implementation’ by Dr. C.M. Chandrashekar, Reader and Head of Optics and Quantum Information, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai and Affiliate Member, Institute for Quantum Computing, University of Waterloo, Canada.

Dr. Chandarshekar has 16 years of research experience in Quantum Information Theory and Quantum Computing and obtained his Ph.D in Quantum Computing from Institute for Quantum Computing, University of Waterloo, Canada.

Dr. Vinay Venugopal, Professor and Head, Department of Physics, GSSSIETW, Convener of the Webinar, welcomed the speaker and the participants to the session. Dr. Shivakumar M, Principal, GSSSIETW, presided over the session.

Dr. Chandrashekar explained the basic concepts of quantum physics used in quantum computing such as quantum bits, quantum superposition and quantum entanglement to perform calculations.

Computing in this manner essentially tackles extremely difficult computational problems that the current third generation computers cannot. Quantum computing uses quantum bits or qubits generated by electron or photon states and the power of a quantum computer doubles every time when an additional qubit is added. The construction and working of different qubit processors and quantum walk algorithm was briefly discussed.

At the end in the interaction session, Dr. Chandrashekar answered several questions raised by the participants including status of Quantum Computing research in India.
