Sports help to explore talent among youths : ZP Chief

Mysore/Mysuru: After remaining silent for over eight months, the Chamundi Vihar Stadium came alive with youths presenting a variety of cultural programmes as part of ‘Yuvajanothsava’ here yesterday.

It was jointly organised by District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Nehru Yuva Kendra and National Service Scheme (NSS). 

The event was also held to select teams to represent Mysuru District in State-level ‘Yuvajanothsava’ where another round of selection trials would be held to represent the State in ‘National Yuvajan Sapthaha’ to be held in New Delhi from Jan. 12 to 18, in connection with the birth anniversary of Swami  Vivekananda.

As many as 500 participants in the age group of 15 years to 29 years presented nine forms of arts at Chamundi Vihar Stadium.

Parimala Shyam, President, Mysuru Zilla Panchayat (ZP) who inaugurated the event, opined that Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports would play a vital role in exploring hidden talent among youths. 

Achievers in internal arena would be from the sports background. Many have found out a bright future due to their excellence in sports field. Such programmes would be held more in the coming days to hunt talent among youths, she added.

N.V. Phaneesh, Chairman, Mylac, said the current population of India was 133 crore of which 67 percent was youth and this has made other countries to look at India. The achievement of India would reach new heights in the coming days through performance by youths. 

Earlier, parents were deciding the future of children but now it was the latter who would decide what they wanted to do. In the wake of this, the Government Departments must chalk out various programmes to hunt talented youths.

District Superintendent of Police C.B. Ryshyanth said involving in sports would not only help in physical development but also to develop sportive spirit and discipline in life. Parents must identify in which sport their wards are good and put them into it. Interest in sport must not be restricted to just one or two hours daily but it should be part of curriculum too. “Police come even if they are called during mid-night. Will the staff of other Departments come during that time? The cops come because Police is a disciplined force.”

L.R. Mahadevaswamy, Chairman, Zoo Authority of Karnataka, Gowramma Somashekar, Vice-President and Manjunathan, Chairman, Standing Committee on Health and Education, Mysuru Zilla Panchayat, Satyaraju, Corporator, G.Omprakash, Assistant Director, Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, S.Siddaramaiah, District Coordinator and others were present.

While indoor stadium allowed solo performance, a stage was erected outside the stadium to allow youths to display their talent. In solo performance, each participant was given 10 minutes time to perform Bharatanatya, Odissi, Manipuri, Kuchupudi and Kathak. In instrument section, each artiste was given 10 minutes time to play Sitar, Flute, Tabla, Veena, Mridanga, Harmonium and guitar. A duration of 15 minutes was given to present the Karnatak and Hindustani music. Likewise, competitions were held in debate, one man show, folk songs and folk dance.”
