Mysore/Mysuru: Retired Professor Dr. D. Narayan from Kerala highlighted the significant contributions made by migrants to the industrial growth of Bengaluru.
He expressed these thoughts on the first day of the two-day National Conference titled ‘Delimitation: Inter-State asymmetry and its implications’ co-organised recently by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Research and Extension Centre at the University of Mysore and the Indian Political Forum, at Vishwajnani Auditorium in Manasagangothri.
Dr. Narayan noted the lack of emphasis by States on job creation and lamented that political parties often appear preoccupied with their own activities and agendas, leaving little time for concentrating on employment and wealth generation.
He underscored the necessity for robust coordination and cooperation among neighbouring States, advocating for constructive dialogues in a friendly atmosphere to facilitate comprehensive development.
Highlighting the role of migrants in Bengaluru’s current status, Dr. Narayan urged political parties to recognise this reality. He pointed out that the State’s economy experienced a setback when migrants initially departed for their hometowns. However, economic recovery was observed upon their return to Bengaluru.
He stressed the importance of unity, emphasising that the community should stand together as one.
Addressing the Goods and Services Tax (GST), Dr. Narayan expressed concern over the existing unequal distribution between the Centre and the States. He criticised the current 60:40 ratio in which GST is shared and pointed out several flaws in the GST system that have seemingly gone unnoticed by authorities.
Other attendees included Prof. V.K. Nataraj, former Director, Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai and Prof. R.M. Chintamani, President of Sakaala Spandana Mysuru.
