Storerooms & Storage

July 29, 2019

Be it home or office, space is required to store and cupboards become part of the interior design, although the type of material, shape, size and positioning varies according to the requirement of the individuals.

Store can be either for food, grocery or for placing things which we don’t need for the present. Storage also relates to places like cupboards in bedrooms. Hence, in general, getting things organised and creating a space for placing them is an important design aspect both in Vastu and Feng Shui science.

In the ancient Indian science of Vastu, the storeroom for placing food and provisions is given a lot of importance as this is said to contribute towards prosperity and good health. The storeroom in the house has both a functional and geo-biological significance. There are two different types of storerooms — the food storeroom and the junk storeroom. The storeroom used for food storage is usually near the  kitchen whereas the storeroom used exclusively for junk storage may be under a staircase or elsewhere.

Placing for storing grocery and food should be free from dampness to prevent growth of fungus and  bacteria and the room should be clutter free. Moreover in Vastu, South direction is ruled by Mars, it represents heat and energy hence a store in this sector is preferred if possible as it ensure perennial availability of food and provision. The next best sector is Northwest and this sector ensures continuity and freshness of the storage.

Some of the basic Vastu guidelines for creating store are:

• Always leave eastern side vacant in the storeroom.

• White, blue or yellow are the desirable colours of the tiles and the walls.

• Cupboards or racks should be placed in the South-West directions.

For storage cupboards to place clothes, linen and personal belongings in a bedroom, there are simple guidelines which can be adapted.

Closed designed storage such as wardrobes, chests or drawer units often provide ideal storage solutions and are the all-important place for storing clothings, linens and valuables especially in bedrooms. It enables you to put your possessions away neatly, and also have quick access to things you need.

Using the wall which has minimal windows and openings ensures a larger storage wardrobe and one could even think of using the extended areas in irregular shaped room, niche, space beneath room dividers and stairs for storing.

Using lighter shades of veneer/ laminate or polish would make the room look larger and also blend the cupboard into the décor than to make it “stand out” in the room.

Having wealth safe in the cupboard at a higher level is preferred than to place it at the lowest shelf in the cupboard. Dresser units as part of wardrobe design are acceptable as long as the dresser mirrors do not reflect the bed or the toilet door.

Using the space creatively by following the basics of Vastu and Feng Shui would be beneficial not only in terms of budgeting and planning of your homes but will ensure that the space is in total harmony and vibrant.
