Athletics is the mother of all sporting events. Our city’s upcoming and talented Para athlete S. Ramya has done every one proud by winning gold in the Discus-Throw event in the World Para Athletics Grand Prix 10th Fazaa International Athletics Championships held at Dubai on Mar.13. She also won bronze medals in Shot-Put and Javelin-Throw events in the same Championships. She is our ‘Star This Week.’
The 24-year-old threw the discus to a distance of 31.47m to win the gold. Turkey’s Tirikli Busra Nur (21.53m) won silver, while Somayeh Ataei of Iran (23.70m) won bronze. Ramya trains under well-known athlete Mohan Kumar in Chamundi Vihar Stadium, Mysuru.
Ramya also won bronze in Javelin-Throw with a distance of 27.70m and won bronze in Shot-Put with a throw of 9.55m.
Ramya will be taking part in the National Para Athletic Meet at Panchakula in Haryana from Mar.26 to 29.
A BE (Mechanical) graduate, Ramya was born with a deformity in her left hand and is now working at a Sports Centre in city.
Ramya took up to active Para Athletics in June 2016, inspired and motivated by athlete Mohan Kumar. During her school days at Sathyamangalam in Tamil Nadu, Ramya was encouraged to take up athletics by her School PE Director Kandaswamy. She is the daughter of Shanmugham and Subbalakshmi, who hail from Sathyamangalam.
Ramya took part in the National Para Athletic trials in Sonepet conducted by the Indian Para Olympic Committee and qualified for the World Grand Prix achieving the qualifying mark in Discus, Shot-Put and Javelin-Throw events. She took part in the World Para Athletics Grand Prix 10th Fazaa International Athletics Championships-2018 and performed well to win one gold and two bronze medals for India.
Ramya intends to represent India in the Asian Para Athletic Games to be held at Jakarta, Indonesia, in September 2018 and bring glory for our country.
