Vachanas vital for building a better society: Mayor

Mysore/Mysuru: Maintaining that Ambigara Chowdaiah and Vemana were very thoughtful Vachanakaras, Mayor Shivakumar opined that Vachanas are crucial for building a better society.

He was speaking after inaugurating Nija Sharana Sri Ambigara Chowdaiah and Mahayogi Vemana Jayanti celebrations organised jointly by the District Administration and Kannada & Culture Department at Kalamandira here yesterday.

Noting that the Vachanas of Ambigara Chowdaiah are very meaningful, Shivakumar said that caste and communities can get importance only if they stand together. As such, everyone should unite in taking forward the society in the right path, he said adding that a prominent road of the city will be named after Ambigara Chowdaiah.

The Mayor called upon the people to follow the messages spread by Ambigara Chowdaiah and Vemana, in their life.

Resource Person K.S. Ramprasad, in his address, explained the life & times and Vachanas scripted by the two great Vachanakaras.

Asserting that Ambigara Chowdaiah was the most prominent among Shivasharanas, he highlighted the struggles of the great Vachanakara for the cause of Backward Classes.

He also explained how Vemana, who led a disgustful life in Andhra Pradesh, later renounced everything and transformed himself into a very resourceful person by scripting great and meaningful Vachanas.

Ramprasad called upon the people to imbibe the values advocated by the two illustrious  Shivasharanas.

Deputy Mayor Dr. G. Roopa, Kannada and Culture Joint Director V.N. Mallikarjunaswamy, Assistant Director Dr. Sudarshan and others were present.
