What’s Next for the New York Jets at Quarterback?

February 4, 2025

Much was expected of the New York Jets in 2024. After a painful 14-year drought – the longest in the league and franchise history – the green machine had genuine hopes of reaching the postseason this term. However, a disastrous campaign leaves them at a critical crossroads. Superstar Aaron Rodgers delivered an underwhelming campaign and now the MetLife hierarchy must decide where the team goes from here.

Stick with Aaron Rodgers

Even in the twilight of his career, Aaron Rodgers remains a superstar. He led the Green Bay Packers to the Lombardi against all odds back in 2010, winning the Big Game’s MVP award in the process. However, now he must sit on the sideline while current online Super Bowl odds have his conference rival Kansas City Chiefs at -138 to take home the Lombardi.

With Rodgers guaranteed not to feature in the Super Bowl, it’s a number of his contemporaries that will be aiming to pick up the MVP award in his absence. The latest American football betting odds currently make Patrick Mahomes the +110 favorite to be named the main man in New Orleans, but Rodgers will be thinking about whether he will ever play again.

While he may no longer resemble the legend who once secured four MVP awards, there’s still a case for giving him another shot. First and foremost, the Jets made a massive financial commitment to him, including a restructured contract that ties up cap space. Cutting or trading him now would bring steep penalties, leaving the roster hamstrung in other areas.

Additionally, the Jets are not far removed from the hype that Rodgers brought. With a healthy offensive line, improved playmakers, and a more cohesive system, there’s an argument that the veteran could bounce back. Add to that that his former number one target in Green Bay Davante Adams has been brought in at A-Rod’s request, and it may well be worth one more shot.

Draft or Trade a New Quarterback

Moving on from Rodgers entirely and drafting a new quarterback is likely the most exciting option for Jets fans. The New Yorkers will be at number seven on the board this year, only three of the teams ahead of them are expected to be on the lookout for a new quarterback, which could leave the Jets in a good position.

But unfortunately for them, this year’s class of quarterbacks doesn’t hold a candle to last year. As well as that, this path comes with risk. The Jets’ history of developing young quarterbacks such as Sam Darnold and Zach Wilson is far from stellar.

Outside of that, then they will be left with the trade market. Kirk Cousins could well be available after a disappointing season with the Atlanta Falcons which saw him replaced by a rookie. Elsewhere, the aforementioned Sam Darnold could make a return after an impressive season in Minnesota, while Justin Fields may well be available after having to settle for a backup role to Russell Wilson in Pittsburgh.
