Woes of passengers travelling in night train

October 27, 2021

Sir,

A few days back, I was returning from Shivamogga after visiting Chowdeshwari temple in Sigandoor by night train. I did not get ticket in the sleeper coach and hence I was travelling in second class (2S).

Since it was a weekend holiday, the compartment was full of passengers and in fact even there were passengers in waiting list sitting and sleeping on the luggage carrier. This was causing a lot of discomfort and inconvenience to passengers sitting beneath them on their respective seats. Because of this they could not keep their luggage on the carrier.

Add to this dismay there were some passengers eating comestibles, drinking water and in the process sometimes spilling it on the passengers sitting beneath them.

To my surprise even the Ticket Collector did not bother to tell them to get down from the luggage carrier.  I also witnessed seated passengers requesting the passengers on the carrier to get down but when they did not oblige there were heated arguments between the passengers.

Why people don’t understand that luggage carrier is not meant for sitting or sleeping. It is meant for only carrying luggage of the passengers. Luggage charge is also included in the train fare.

Hence, I earnestly appeal to the Railway authorities to write in all the bogies  “Luggage Carrier is for Luggage only and sitting or sleeping on the carrier is strictly prohibited” and penalise the offenders who violate the rule.
