World Bank aid for Mysuru? A costly mistake in-the-making

February 1, 2025

Sir,

This is to express my strong opposition to Mysuru City Corporation’s (MCC) proposal to seek Rs. 2,843 crore in aid from the World Bank for transforming Mysuru into a “sustainable and liveable city” (SOM dated Jan. 28).

Our city’s past experience with external funding, such as the Rs. 100 crore loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has been disastrous. That project was plagued by corruption, unprofessionalism and a complete lack of foresight. Not only did it fail to deliver its promised benefits, but it also placed a heavy financial burden on taxpayers.

Seeking aid from the World Bank risks repeating the same mistakes. It will only serve to enrich corrupt politicians, contractors and bureaucrats at the expense of tax-paying citizens. Mysuru, with its rich cultural heritage and strong community spirit, must prioritise its unique needs rather than blindly following externally dictated development models.

International funding often comes with conditions that undermine local autonomy and lead to unsustainable development. Instead of relying on foreign aid, MCC should explore alternative funding options and focus on community-driven initiatives. A truly sustainable and liveable city must reflect the needs and aspirations of its residents, not the interests of external agencies.

Moreover, MCC has failed in its basic duties — waste management, road and drainage maintenance and park upkeep. Given this track record, one can only imagine the real motives behind this proposal.

Before rushing to the World Bank, elected representatives must engage in a serious brainstorming session with intellectuals and concerned citizens to find viable, locally suited solutions for Mysuru’s development.
