Alleges torture and harassment by husband and his family members

Bengaluru: Young, talented Kannada playback singer Sushmitha (26) has allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her mother’s residence in Nagarabhavi in city yesterday.

Sushmitha hanged herself from a ceiling and it is claimed that she took the dreadful step after being harassed by her husband Sharath Kumar and his aunt. Sushmitha had also sent messages to her brother before taking the extreme step.

According to the Police, Sushmitha, a resident of Kumaraswamy Layout, came to her mother’s house in Nagarabhavi on Sunday, had dinner and chatted with her mother Meenakshi and brother Sachin before going to sleep. At about 1 am, she (Sushmitha) sent messages to her brother, asking him to show it to their mother. On WhatsApp messages, Sushmitha stated the tough time she was having with her husband Sharath Kumar and his family members, forcing her to commit suicide. Sushmitha had a fight with her husband Sharath, a car showroom Manager, before coming to her mother’s house, it is learnt.

The WhatsApp message said, “Sorry Amma, I am paying the price for my mistakes. My husband used to torture me by listening to his aunt. Whenever there was an argument, he forced me to get out of the house. Do not let them go unpunished. Sharath, Vaidehi and Geetha are directly responsible for my death. I pleaded with Sharath and also fell at his feet, but he did not respond. I do not want to die in Sharath’s house. I have been facing this kind of harassment since day one of my marriage, but I did not reveal this to anyone. Perform my last rites in our place and let my brother perform my last rites.”

Acting on a complaint from Sushmitha’s mother, the Police who have registered a case against Sharath, Vaidehi and Geetha, have launched a hunt to nab them. 

Sushmitha sung for movies like ‘Haalu Tuppa’, ‘Sri Saamanya’ among many others.
