720-gram baby survives against all odds

August 18, 2024

Mysore/Mysuru: When a couple was informed that the foetus cannot survive due to significantly low blood supply, they were devastated. They were advised to terminate the pregnancy, as the baby had no chances of survival due to extreme prematurity and low birth-weight.

Seeking a second opinion, they came to Narayana Hospital, Mysuru, for the medical termination of pregnancy. However, what followed was a remarkable journey of resilience and medical expertise.

On July 8, 2024, their baby was born extremely prematurely, weighing just 720 grams. Despite completing 28 weeks of gestation, the baby suffered from Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR), meaning the growth was equivalent to 26 weeks, with an ideal weight at this stage being over 900 grams. Immediately after birth, the baby was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Narayana Hospital for intensive management. Initially placed on a ventilator for one week, the baby slowly began to improve and gain weight, demonstrating incredible strength and the effectiveness of the NICU team’s care.

During the two months in NICU, the baby received round-the-clock monitoring and support. The medical team at Narayana Hospital, led by expert neonatologists, ensured the baby received best possible care, from ventilator support to gradual weaning to supplemental oxygen and then breathing independently. The baby’s steady improvement and eventual healthy discharge at a weight of 1.5 kilograms on Aug. 3, 2024, is a testament to the hospital’s commitment to excellence in neonatal care.

Dr. Mona Kuslum, Consultant Paediatrician at Narayana Hospital, Mysuru, explained, “The baby’s survival and progress were challenging yet rewarding. Despite being born extremely premature, the baby responded well to our comprehensive treatment plan. Our dedicated team of neonatal experts provided continuous care and monitoring, enabling the baby to overcome the initial critical phase.”
