Mandya: The officers of Child Welfare Committee and the Department of Women and Child Welfare were reportedly threatened and assaulted by people when they made an attempt to stop an alleged child marriage which was being solemnised in Shikaripura village of Nagamangala taluk in the  district yesterday.

On a tip-off, the officers, led by Child Helpline Officer Sujata, were said to have gone to the village where a minor girl was about to be wedded to a boy.

The relatives of the girl supported by villagers asserted that no child marriage was being performed. When media persons too arrived to cover the incident the villagers reportedly threatened and assaulted the officers and media persons. When the situation was reaching a flash point, Nagamangala Police were summoned who managed to bring the situation under control and allowed the officers to leave.

However, Sujata said that later she got the age of the girl to be married checked from the school records of the girl, it was found that the girl was 19 years old and hence, no complaint of child marriage was registered.
